First Place

Nathaniel Gonzales

ETERNAL

By Nathaniel Gonzales

This photo was taken in Assateague Island National Seashore in eastern Maryland in May 2015. Composed before sunrise on a foggy morning, I was interested in capturing the patterns of lines and textures made by the incoming waves to the sandy shore. It was a never-ending cycle of waves, and each time it was different. See more of Nathaniel Gonzales’ photography at nathanielgonzales.com.
Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF 18-200mm at 18mm, ƒ/18, 1.6 sec., manual exposure, ISO 100, Manfrotto Befree tripod, LEE graduated neutral-density filters

Second Place

Slobodan Blagojevic

THE MAGNIFICENT TETONS

By Slobodan Blagojevic

I was in Grand Teton National Park in early October a few years ago. I was halfway on my way back to Jackson Hole, passing by the Teton Point Turnout, when I saw the break in the clouds. What was fascinating about the scene was that the mighty mountain range managed to break the heavy cloud cover in two, so that the lower clouds got stuck behind the mountaintops and the higher clouds continued their advance, creating the miles-long crack and a chance for the setting sun to create the proverbial “silver lining.” Another striking aspect was that the lower clouds seemed to turn into fog and glide down into the valley (on the right side of the image). Canon EOS 40D, Canon EF 17-55mm ƒ/2.8 IS, ƒ/8, 1/20 sec., bracketed +/-2 EV, Gitzo tripod, PTGui Pro and Lightroom CC
