In a slew of full frame mirrorless camera releases in 2020, it was easy to overlook the Panasonic S5. That’s a shame because the S5 may be the best L-mount full frame camera that Panasonic has introduced so far. While it doesn’t have as many “professional” level features as the Panasonic S1, S1R or S1H mirrorless cameras, the S5 is less expensive than those models and has a smaller and, arguably, more user-friendly design. (Some of the earlier Panasonic S-series cameras are beasts.) Like several of the cameras on our list, the Panasonic S5 boasts several key photo and video features that qualify it as a hybrid model suited to “content creators,” which is anyone interested in capturing both still photos and multi-media video content on the reg. If that sounds like you, the S5 with its 35mm-sized 24.3MP full frame sensor and ability to shoot full frame 4K video at 30p of APS-C cropped 4K video at up to 60p, is definitely worth considering. The S5 has the best weather-sealing of any of the cameras in our list, and the best autofocus of the S-series, particularly in low light, for both photos and videos, thanks to combining Contrast AF with DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology. According to Panasonic, the S5 can lock in on a subject in approximately 0.08 seconds and focus down to -6EV luminance. Call the Panasonic S5, a master of the dark arts.
