Sony’s tiny Alpha a7 and a7R brought full frame to the mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera—the a7, with a 24.3-megapixel Sony Exmor CMOS sensor, and the a7R, a 36.4-megapixel one with no OLPF (optical low-pass, or anti-aliasing, filter). Now comes the a7S, with a similar compact body, but a new 12.2-megapixel full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor with a very wide dynamic range, a standard ISO range of 100-102,400 (50-409,600 expanded), and 4K video.
The a7S uses the a7R’s high-precision Fast Intelligent AF system, but the contrast-based system’s sensitivity has been improved to EV -4 (the a7 features Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF, which combines on-sensor phase- and contrast-detection AF for improved performance on action subjects). The a7S can do 5 fps in Speed Priority Continuous Shooting mode. Shutter speeds range from 30 to 1?8000 sec., plus B. The NP-FW50 battery is good for about 320 shots per charge via the XGA OLED Tru-Finder eye-level EVF or 380 shots via the tilting 3-inch LCD monitor.
Featuring full-pixel readout 4K and HD video at 24p and 30p, the new sensor and BIONZ X image processor process data from all of the sensor’s pixels with no binning or line-skipping, utilizing the full width of the sensor, resulting in better video quality, free of aliasing, moiré and false-color artifacts. QFHD (3840×2160) 4K video requires output to an optional third-party 4K recorder, but you can record full HD 1920×1080 directly to a memory card at 60p, 60i, 30p or 24p. In APS-C crop mode, you can record HD 1280×720 video at 120 fps for a 5X slow-motion effect. S-Log2 gamma (common to Sony’s pro video cameras) expands dynamic range by up to 1300%. And, for the first time in a Sony camera, the workflow-friendly XAVC S recording format is provided, plus AVCHD and MP4 codecs. Built-in WiFi and NFC make wireless connection to smart devices easy.
Dimensions are 5.0×3.7×1.9 inches; weight is 15.7 ounces.
STANDOUT FEATURE: A new wide-dynamic-range, high-sensitivity sensor for the smallest and lightest full-frame interchangeable-lens camera series, plus 4K video.
1.Atop the body to the right of the viewfinder are the mode dial, exposure-comp dial, C1 custom button and shutter button surrounded by on/off switch.
2.Very compact for a full-frame camera, the mirrorless a7S resembles a tiny DSLR.
3. The a7S’s lens mount accepts Sony E (APS-C) and FE (full-frame E) optics. The a7 cameras can also use Sony A-mount (DSLR) lenses via adapters.
