Olympus’ mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras take their design cues from legendary Olympus 35mm film cameras. The E-P PEN series was inspired by the PEN half-frame models of the 1950s through the 1980s, and the OM-D by the compact OM-series of 35mm SLRs. The new flagship E-P model is the E-P5, featuring the same highly rated 16.1-megapixel Micro Four Thirds image sensor and TruePic VI processor as the popular OM-D E-M5 in a rugged and classic-looking, all-metal body. It offers the 5-Axis Image Stabilization system introduced in the OM-D E-M5, but now with automatic detection of panning, for both still photo and movies—and the ability to view the effect on-monitor.
The E-P5 is the first Olympus camera to incorporate Wi-Fi. Just scan the QR code displayed on the camera’s LCD with your smartphone to sync up; then you can transfer images and even operate the camera remotely. The camera can also use your smartphone’s built-in GPS to geotag your images.
Besides being able to shoot 1080 full HD, 720 HD and 640×480 video at 30 fps, the E-P5 can do time-lapse movies via its built-in intervalometer. There are also 12 Art Filters that can be applied to individual images or videos. Photo Story mode combines multiple images into a single-image collage, and you can also combine several images into one via multiple exposure.
Like all Micro Four Thirds cameras, the E-P5 can use all MFT lenses, and just about any lens for which an adapter can be found. Current Olympus MFT lenses range from a 9-18mm zoom through a 75-300mm zoom, providing, thanks to the MFT sensor’s 2.0x crop factor, 35mm-camera-equivalent focal lengths from 18mm through 600mm.
