The new PEN E-PM2 can be considered the “little brother” of the new E-PL5. In fact, the two cameras more closely resemble each other than their E-PM1 and E-PL3 predecessors (in large part because both now have grips).
Like the E-PL5, the E-PM2 provides the opportunity to get the excellent 16.1-megapixel image sensor of the flagship OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera in a truly pocketable package. The E-PM2, at 4.3×2.5×1.3 inches and 7.9 ounces, is slightly tinier than its tiny “big” sibling. It has a 3-inch touch-screen monitor like the E-PL5, but the E-PM2’s doesn’t tilt.
Video features are similar to the E-PL5’s—both 1080 and 720 HD at 30 fps in AVI or MOV format, with stereo sound and the ability to apply the built-in Art Filters “on the fly.” Both cameras offer the same set of Art Filters, including diorama, Pop Art, Soft Focus and a new Water Color filter.
Like the E-PL5, the E-PM2 can shoot at 8 fps with IS off and focus and exposure locked, at 3.6 fps with IS off, and at 3 fps with IS on. All Olympus PEN cameras feature the company’s sensor-shift image stabilization and sensor dust-remover.
Like all MFT cameras, the E-PM2 can use all MFT lenses, regardless of manufacturer. Olympus currently offers 12, from a 9-18mm superwide-angle zoom through a 75-300mm supertele-zoom. With the MFT sensor’s 2X focal-length factor, this provides 35mm-camera equivalent focal lengths of 18mm through 600mm.
