INTRODUCED 10/2012

While the new Nikon 1 J2 compact mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera closely resembles its predecessor, the V2 has a new look and incorporates a number of improvements. And inside, there’s a new 14.2-megapixel CX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3A processor, enhancing image quality and operating speed, and providing ISO settings from 160-6400 for shooting in a wide range of lighting situations. The V2 can record 12-bit compressed RAW files as well as JPEGs.

The body is compact (4.2×3.2×1.8 inches, 9.8 ounces), yet comfortable to use, thanks to the new handgrip and the built-in, eye-level electronic viewfinder. There’s also a 3-inch LCD monitor. The EN-EL21 lithium-ion battery provides 310 shots per charge (per CIPA standards). Images are saved on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards.

The hybrid AF system provides 73-point phase-detection AF (which can keep up with 15 fps shooting), while the contrast-detection AF features 135 AF areas (41 in auto-area AF mode).

The V2 has excellent video capabilities. It can shoot 1080 full HD at 60i and 30p, 720 HD at 60p, plus slow-motion recording at 400 fps with 640×240 resolution or at 1200 fps with 320×120 resolution. All video is recorded with stereo sound when desired via a built-in or an optional external microphone.

Movies are recorded in MOV format, with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression. Enhanced Motion Snapshot Mode combines a single defining still image with a four-second or 10-second MOV clip.

Nikon currently offers six lenses for its Nikon 1 cameras: the VR 10-30mm ƒ/3.5-5.6, VR 30-110mm ƒ/3.8-5.6, VR 10-100mm ƒ/4.5-5.6, 10mm ƒ/2.8, and new 18.5mm ƒ/1.8 and 11-27.5mm ƒ/3.5-5.6. The CX sensor’s focal-length factor is 2.7X, so this provides the user with 35mm-equivalent focal lengths of 27mm to 297mm.

STANDOUT FEATURE: The Nikon 1-series camera is for the more serious shooter, and the V2 offers fast speeds and unique Movie modes.
