I had been working on a series photographing in the New York City subway and the Staten Island Ferry. I was primarily looking for moments of connection between people or isolated people caught up in their own thoughts. During the morning rush hour one day I happened to be standing close to a gentleman who was cradling his infant child, so I quickly focused my camera on him just as he was looking down at his sleeping child with great love and tenderness. Also—which I didn’t notice at first—there was an advertisement in the background that read, “Happy Hibernation.” In working on this project, I perfected the style of moving very quickly in getting the shot and then moving on. In most cases the subject has not seen me take the photo. In this case it was one of those photographic moments when it all came together within a few seconds.
