El Capitan is an ancient volcanic plug 1500 feet high and rises out of Monument Valley. It is considered sacred by the Navajo and one of my favorite landmarks to photograph and visit, especially during the monsoon season. My favorite images of this majestic rock have been the B&W’s. I sat off on a dirt road across from this very large landmark when I photographed this. It was windy and a storm was moving in. I sat and just stared at it for a bit. It had a sadness to it. It seemed so out of place in the modern world. For me, this image captures the mystery and loneliness of the time and place. I can imagine that if I take that path leading to it, I may not come back.
