Photo Details
- Title: Sunset During The Annual Burning Of The Flint Hills Prairies
- State/Province/Region: Kansas
- Country: United States
- Nearest Area: Flint Hills Prairie
- Nearest Town: Manhattan KS
- Description: This photo was taken during the annual Flint Hills prairie burn. Farmers burn off their pastures every April. The burning helps to jumpstart the prairie grass growth that cattle can feed on during the summer and fall months.
- Notes: Prairie burns typically occur from the first week of April to about April 15th. Temperatures vary widely from year to year, from near freezing, to near 90 degrees. Average high temps are in the lower 60 degree range. The prairie burns are dependant on the weather. Too windy, wet, or dry, and farmers will postpone burning until better conditions prevail.
- Brief Directions: The Flint Hills are located in East Central Kansas, along a thin east-west line from Manhattan Kansas, south to near Wichita, Kansas.
- Best Season: Spring
- Gear: Canon EOS 50D, Velbon Tripod, 17-35mm f2.8 lens.
