- Description: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is my favorite church in Savannah. The Catholic Church of the city was established in 1796, and in 1850 the Diocese of Savannah was created. Construction on the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist began in 1873 on it current site; the building was dedicated in 1876 and completed in 1896. However, just as short as two years after, the cathedral was nearly destroyed by fire in 1898 and was rebuilt in 1899. In December 2000, after nearly three years of restoration work, the cathedral was rededicated, as it shines on Savannah's skyline. As the highest building in downtown, the cathedral is the most visited site among all other attractions.
