• Description: Afternoon thunderstorms are common all along the Mt. Evans Scenic Byway in summer. The road to the top of Mt. Evans is the highest paved road in North America, exceeding 14,000 feet. It is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day with a short growing season for alpine flowers. Abundant wildlife (including Mountain Goats, Big Horn Sheep, Marmots, Pika, and Ptarmigan) can be seen from the road and are habituated to humans, making photography a wonderful experience.
• Brief Directions: From I-70 West, take the last entrance into Idaho Springs and go left (south) up the canyon. Keep driving until you reach the entrance to the Scenic Byway. After paying a fee, continue on to the top of Mt. Evans.
• Best Season: Summer
