Photo Details

  • Title: Mono Lake Tufa And Sea Foam
  • State/Province/Region (required): California
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Area: Eastern Sierra
  • Nearest Town: Lee Vining
  • Description: Eastern Sierra's Mono Lake features its other worldly, calcium carbonate tufa structures. They were formed over centuries when super-heated, mineral laden spring water percolated into the alkaline lake causing a chemical reaction to create the towers. When fresh water streams were diverted to southern California, the lake lowered surface revealed the tufa. Winds whip up the lake which is twice as salty as the ocean and blow sea foam onto the shore.
  • Brief Directions: From Lee Vining, go south on Highway 395 for five miles. Turn left (east) onto Highway 120. Watch for the signs for South Tufa where you'll turn left onto a dirt road and into the parking lot.
  • Notes: While any time of the year offers shooting possibilities at South Tufa, fall is a wonderful time as the entire eastern Sierra is ablaze with color. Sunrise is the most popular time to be on site. Arrive at least 45 minutes before to allow you to catch the dawn which can light the sky with the sun's first rays passing over the high Nevada desert and create first light on the Sierra Nevada range. Sunset also has its possibilities especially just after a storm or anytime there are clouds over the range.
  • GPS Longitude: 119.01
  • GPS Latitude: 37.56
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Gear: Nikon D70 Nikon, 18-70mm, Bogen Tripod and head
