Photo Details

  • Title: Horseshoe Bend
  • State/Province/Region (required): Arizona
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Area: Glen Canyon Recreation Area
  • Nearest Town: Page
  • Description: Horseshoe Bend, just a few miles south and downstream from Glen Canyon Dam is an incredible example of waters powerful influence. This bend in the Colorado River is so vast in scope and size that an extremely wide angle lens is required to 'get it all in'. Because of the depth of the canyon itself, the right climatic conditions must exist in order for the proper light to present to capture the right image. This shot was taken in the evening during a snowstorm when clouds had sufficiently blocked the contrasty light from the sun long enough to get a even exposure.
  • Brief Directions: On the main state road heading south from Page, Arizona watch for the signs for Horseshoe Bend and pull in the parking lot. A 3/4 mile hike up a steep grade and then down the other side will put you on the edge of an incredible scene.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Nikon D300 / Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 / Manfrotto Tripod
