Photo Details

  • Title: Tri-Color Heron
  • State/Province/Region (required): Florida
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Area: Upper East Coast of Florida
  • Nearest Town: St Augustine
  • Description: This was taken at The St Augustine Alligator Farm. It is a Zoological Park with exotic reptiles, birds and mammals...but the biggest attraction is the bird rookery. It is natural and the birds are free to come and go. In the Spring the birds sport their breeding plumage and do not fear the humans on the boardwalk around them. The photographers and others were courteous of me in my wheelchair and of each other. You can get very close to the birds. Gators ply the waters below you and snack on any unlucky bird to fall in the water or little ones pushed from the nest...but they protect the birds from other predators.
  • Brief Directions: Take Hwy 1A across the Bridge of Lions and the Farm will be on your right at 999 Anastasia Blvd (also Hwy 1A) in St Augustine. There is a phone number (904) 824-3337
  • Notes: If you have a fixed lens of 500mm you may find yourself at a disadvantage here. I spoke with a couple who had them and they said they had to back way off to get a good shot. Otherwise they could get only the eye or part of the head of the birds. They are that close. A zoom would serve you well. Late March and early to late April are the best times for these shots. I was there on 4/31/09.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Panasonic FZ18K
