- Description: I was on a delegation with the Fair Trade Coffee Company, Higher Grounds Trading Company. This is a woman, Katarina, who lives in a Mayan indigenous community who are a part of Maya Vinic. Maya Vinic is a cooperative of 400 coffee growers of 34 different highland communities in Chiapas. It formed from a conflict in the mountain community, Acteal, in 1997 where paramilitary forces massacred forty- five women, men, and children while they were praying in a church. They formed as a response to the injustice. Also, thousands were displaced from their homes, so they had to have financial stability.
