Photo Details
- Title: The Snowy Wave
- State/Province/Region: Arizona
- Country: United States
- Nearest Area: Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness
- Nearest Town: Page
- Description: Access to the Wave requires an advanced permit that is available through a lottery process through the BLM. Due to the popularity of this area, and the limited amount of people allowed in each day (10 lottery and 10 walk-in) it is becoming extremely difficult to have access to this unique place. The Wave is world reknowned for its mythical waves and contours of sandstone that seem to bend and twist in every possible direction. It is truly a redrock lovers paradise. Our permit day occured the day after freezing rain and new fallen snow followed by partly cloudy skies. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we were fortunate enough to be the first ones in there, so we were careful to not leave any footprints that would mar the images we took. The Wave is incredible any time of year, but during winter it becomes something special!
- Brief Directions: Interested parties should contact the BLM directly to receive all the information there is about this area including the lottery process. There are too many people without any kind of outdoor smarts or skills that are trying to access this area without being physically prepared. After talking to a BLM law enforcement ranger, we found out that one lady tried 'hiking' in wearing a pair of high heels! Others have stated that they have become lost and they would rather there be a paved trail put in to make the route finding much easier. Give me a break! If you can't handle the situation as stated on the BLM website I prefer that you don't apply for a permit and let others that are up to the task have a shot at getting in. Sorry to spout off, but some people are just really stupid! Anyway, the Wave which is in the Vermilion Cliffs wilderness is half way between Page, Az and Kanab, Ut. It lies in rugged redrock country and should only be attempted by those who know what the outdoors can dish out. It is not for cityslickers!
