- Brief Directions: Directly across the Merriconeag Sound from Bailey Island is Harpswell Neck, another one of the many small islands here in Casco Bay. You'll often see the view of Harpswell Neck from Bailey Island in several of my photos. Just before you reach the public boat launch and beach there, there's a wonderful public pier facing west, making it an ideal location for sunset images. Yesterday afternoon became quite cloudy, which is always a gamble for sunset photography. Clouds make for the most interesting and beautiful sunsets as they can bring out unusual and vibrant colours, as well as create stunning patterns in the sky. However, sometimes the clouds don't quite manage to break up as expected, and instead blanket a sunset rather than complimenting it. Although clouds before sunset are always a gamble, I had a feeling that they would break up, so I decided to take the half-hour drive over to Harpswell Neck and see how the clouds would react. As I was driving, I could see the clouds slowly burning off towards the horizon, which was the best thing I could hope for. My timing was perfect as I arrived to the beach - which is what I planned on photographing...but just before I reached the beach, I caught out of the corner of my eye a long pier and decided to turn around and investigate that instead. To my Irish luck and surprise, the pier was marked "PUBLIC" so I knew I could photograph it. By the time I set up my camera and lens, the show I received was astounding. Four seagulls decided to perch themselves on the railing, as if they knew I was there and wanted to be in the picture. The boats in the left-hand side of the photo epitomizes a summer in Harpswell, where you can watch both fishing vessels and leisure boats share the waters during the golden hours.

Christopher, I love how you captured the light in this photograph. Nice sunset with the last of the light highlighting the dock! Nice shot!
