Yeah, Jeff, this isn't my cup of tea either, but my point is simply that this image, however manipulated, is entered in the correct category, unlike all the people who have mistakenly entered their animal photos here. I'll leave it to the judges to deal with the digital issues.
  2. 'A Winter's Dusting'

Hi all, First of all, I should probably mentioned that I am a professional photographer. I did previously mention that this subject was a 'client'. That being said, this is my first time entering a contest of any kind, web or otherwise. I got an email from Sony simply because I'm on some Sony affiliated mailing list. Is it always like this here??? I never dreamed that this image which is an actual portrait session photo, with post-production done as described in the 'description', by hand, could in any way be considered controversial. And now someone has even accused me of cheating!?!? What's with that?? Is it always like this here? If you don't like it, or think it doesn't somehow qualify for the 'Environmental Portraiture', don't vote for it! It's as simple as that.

I see people entering this contest don't follow the rules. It seems like every contest out there always has people that don't read the rules. To me, an environmental portrait is a portrait of a person taken in the environment, not pasted in from somewhere else. This whole photo looks fake.

@ Paul - read the image description. It was about 37 degrees. FYI.
  5. 'A Winter's Dusting'

@Paul - to your comment that the "photo looks fake". Dude! IT'S A FAIRY!!!! If you know where to shoot a 'real' one, please, let me know. ;)

Errrr, Jeff, at this stage a full 1/3 of the 'negative' comments have been yours. And another 1/3 has been me responding to yours and other posts. As for sitting around and somehow working "multiple accounts", I have a life. Not to mention a business that keeps me out on location more often than not. BTW, where's your entry? I seemed to have missed it. I obviously need to see how the masters do it. Thank you for your encouraging support.

To Tricia - Thank you for your very kind words. Much appreciated. And for your observations. It's been kind of interesting to see the amount of 'sudo-anger' this image seems to have stirred up. Kind of weird. Am I really the only one who has discovered 'Photoshop' for post-processing work??? I do come from a background of traditional art, so I find the blend of photography with more traditional techniques, that digital allows to be very cool for me. Less boundaries on expression. But hey, maybe that's just me. :)

To Craig - "my point is simply that this image, however manipulated, is entered in the correct category, unlike all the people who have mistakenly entered their animal photos here. I'll leave it to the judges to deal with the digital issues." - Craig, thank you for pointing this out. This is my first time entering a contest here, so I didn't quite get the amount of entries, that are not by definition (including the actual contest rules) actually 'Environmental Portraits'. I figured the rules must be just loosely suggested. Most belong in the category of 'Nature Photography'. A 'Portrait' by definition is 'a picture of a person'. 'Environmental' simply puts that 'person' in surroundings that tell 'their' story.
  9. 'A Winter's Dusting'

This is so ridiculous. I would be far too embarrassed to publish this photograph, or as some are calling it, "digital illustration". Nice big ugly signature on the photo Sol.
  10. 'A Winter's Dusting'

no offense Sol but I think its really obnoxious to have that signature at the bottom of the image. I get distracted by it and I don't think the judges will be too into it. I know you don't want to get your images stolen, but that is ridiculous. After years of subscribing to these magazines and years of these contests, never once have I seen a winning image published with a signature on it. Good luck!
