Photo Details

  • Title: Found On A Pearly Everlasting On May Day
  • State/Province/Region (required): New Jersey
  • Country (required): United States
  • Description: May Day photography in a local Nature Preserve. I photographed this small spring flower growing along the riverbank and didn't notice the tiny fly until I'd filled the frame (1:1). "Anaphalis margaritacea is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.9 m (3ft) by 1 m (3ft 3in). It is hardy to zone 3 and is not frost tender. It is in flower in August, and the seeds ripen in September. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is not self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil."
