Photo Details

  • Title: Meeting Of The Clans
  • State/Province/Region (required): Alaska
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Town: Juneau
  • Description: The genus name for the orca or killer whale is Orcinus which means “of the kingdom of the dead”. They are referenced in the mythologies of indigenous cultures with reputations varying from being the souls of humans to merciless killers. An orca’s diet appears to depend upon it’s subspecies. A transient killer whale’s diet consists almost exclusively of marine mammals. While a resident killer whale consist primarily of fish and sometimes squid. They have the second heaviest brain of all the marine mammals and are often described as intelligent. I titled this picture “Meeting of the Clans” because it appeared as though at least two, maybe three pods of killer whales had come together for a reunion. They were rolling around each other, spy hoping, and vocalizing with such enthusiasm that we were able to hear them through the hull of our boat. I felt like I had entered into a party that I wasn’t invited to, but no one minded because much more important things needed to be discussed. It was incredible.
