Photo Details

  • Title: Tufa At Mono Lake At Surise
  • State/Province/Region (required): California
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Town: Lee Vining
  • Description: At sunrise at Mono Lake we were greeted by alpenglow. The tufa, normally gray in color glowed orange. The color faded within 5 minutes. Awakening well before sunrise and driving and walking to the site was well worth it.
  • Brief Directions: Driving north on US 395 turn right onto Test Station Road, just short of Lee Vining. Follow Test Station Road and then turn left to the scenic overlook parking lot and walk about 1/2 mile down to waters edge.
  • Notes: It was worth it to wake several hours before sunrise to be able to be at the edge of the lake opposite these tufa columns as the sun rose.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Gear: Canon Rebel T1i, Tamron 18-270
