Photo Details

  • Title: A Trail Not Taken
  • State/Province/Region (required): California
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Town: Coarsegold
  • Description: This work, titled “A Trail Not Taken,” has a complex story. Initially I went out to this spot to do a study in infrared of this beautiful old oak— which we pass by on our rustic road as we leave or enter our ranch. While taking multiple shots— to keep the character of the tree, to get the texture of its beautiful bark, to emphasize the road and surrounding hillside with its rocks—the jet entered the frame and I adjusted my physical position on the road to capture the image of the contrail behind the upper most branches of the tree. Literally this image depicts a tree, a road, three dogs who obviously are not taking that pathway, and a jet contrail (another pathway not taken).  But to me, as an artist —using photography as my medium and seeking a pathway to greater creativity— it represents a sequence of choices and actions meant to achieve a goal.
  • Brief Directions: This oak is about 1/2 mile down the road to our house.
  • Notes: Traditionally infrared shots are just that: red, which is captured in red, green, blue (RGB), but usually printed as a black and white. New technology allows me to swap the red and/or blue channels so that the IR shot can be printed in a limited color gamut.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Canon 20d converted to IR, Canon EF 28-135 IS USM lens
