  • Description: Many people think of going to cooler ground when the temps get warm over the summer. For a photographer, the summer is a magical time to be in the desert. With the right conditions, one can witness some amazing atmospheric conditions and wild monsoon storms. On this particular morning on the North Rim of the grand canyon, I found myself wearing a jacket as the morning temps where chilly as if it were mid autumn. The North Rim is 1000 feet higher in elevation than the south which keeps the temps cooler for those trying to beat the heat. With monsoon storms passing through over the labor day weekend, I knew there would be a chance for dramatic light. I had my heart set on a colorful pink and red sunrise which ended up being a dud. I then headed to Cape Royal to check out the views and really had no reason to shoot as the sun was getting high and the clouds broke apart. I brought the camera along anyways, and by the time I got to the point it began raining. I hunkered down under a tree to wait it out and then proceeded to the view one more time. Again, it began to rain, so I returned to the tree to wait it out once again. Finally as the rain seemed to let up I headed back and set up my tripod and began taking images of the distant showers over the canyon. In an instant, this magnificent rainbow emerged as the light in the canyon began to paint the floor with beautiful shadows. It was surreal, and made me think the canyon was under water for a moment. The rainbow stretched across this side canyon and into the sky. It was a delightful moment and a very colorful one at that. Sometimes the best light emerges when you least expect it.
