Photo Details

  • Title: White Sands Yucca Going Under
  • State/Province/Region (required): New Mexico
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Town: Las Cruces
  • Description: White Sands National Monument has been photographed many times over. It's an amazing place, but I tried to do something different than the usual Yucca on top of a Dune shot. Nothing wrong with those, I have made plenty myself, just wanted to show the essence of the moving sands (gypsum really) as they swallow Yuccas and other plant life. Amazingly, Yuccas can recover the first time they are taken over by a dune, but not the second time.
  • Brief Directions: The visitor center is located on U.S. Highway 70, 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Alamogordo and 52 miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Travelers from Carlsbad Caverns to southern Arizona can follow U.S. 82 through the scenic Sacramento Mountains to reach White Sands National Monument.
  • Notes: In the winter, early spring, and late fall it can get pretty cool, so bring proper clothing.
  • Best Season: Summer
  • Gear: D200
