Photo Details

  • Title: Sunset On The Osa Peninsula
  • State/Province/Region (required):
  • Country (required): Costa Rica
  • Nearest Area: very small town of Caracas
  • Nearest Town: Puerto Jimenez
  • Description: This is an HDR of three shots taken on the beach in Caracas, which is a very, very small town (really just a bar and a couple houses) in the remote Osa peninsula on the west coast of Costa Rica. The shots were processed with Oloneo in the natural setting and I used Photoshop CS4 curves to add more contrast and slight sharpening. I shot at 18 mm with ISO 200 at f/14 with 3 exposures ranging from 1/4 to 1/160 sec, which when processed in Oloneo resulted in an equivalent exposure of 1/10 sec.
  • Brief Directions: From San Jose (Capitol) take a taxi to the Pavas airport (about 11 miles south of the main international airport). We took Nature Air to Puerto Jimenez, which is a small town on the Osa Peninsula. From there we took a taxi on a 2-hour rough, bumpy ride on a long dirt road to Caracas. Caracas is really a couple houses and a seedy bar. We stayed at Luna Lodge, a wonderful ECO lodge located a couple miles up an even rougher, narrower, steep road that is adjacent to the largest natural park in Costa Rica, Corcovado National Park.
  • Notes: The Osa peninsula in on the southwest corner of Costa Rica and abuts the Pacific Ocean. We ventured into the Corcovado National Park via a private airplane ride from Caracas (only one pilot is licensed to land in the national park). We had our own naturalist guide provided by Luna Lodge. We saw almost every animal and bird except for the elusive pumas and jaguars. I came back with over 2 thousand shots including this shot of the beach at sunset. Most of my animal shots was with either my Canon 70-200 f/4 IS or Canon 100-400 f/4-5.6 IS, all landscapes with my trusty 15-85 IS.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Gear: Canon 7d, Canon 15-85 mm IS, Velbon 530 tripod with Acratech GP ballhead
