Photo Details

  • Title: The Midnight Glow Of Halemaumau
  • State/Province/Region (required): Hawaii
  • Country (required): United States
  • Nearest Area: Jaggar Museum
  • Nearest Town: Volcano
  • Description: This shot was taken south of Jaggar Volcano Museum at about 11:00pm using a 25 second exposure at ISO 400 at f/3.5 with lens set at 15 mm. Most people shoot for 5 minutes from the Museum, but my buddy and I shot two nights in a row for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours each night to get the great color in the sky, stars, clouds, and of course, the quickly changing eruption of Halemaumau.
  • Brief Directions: Take Hyw 11 south of Hilo to Volcano then follow the signs to the Jaggar Museum.
  • Notes: It rained the first night and picture taking was not great. The next night we were there we had rain all the way to within 1/2 mile of the museum, then the clouds parted, with the full moon behind us to the south, clouds in the far south horizon, layered clouds higher up, and many stars. And Halemaumau put on an incredible show, with periods of little activity to periods of stunning eruptions and sometimes multiple steam-ash vents spouting. Fantastic.
  • Best Season: Winter
  • Gear: Canon 7d, Canon 15-85 mm IS, Velbon 530 tripod with Acratech GP ballhead
