  • Description: This is part of a book project titled "Service Dogs & The Lives They Touch. This photo book will tell the story of service dogs and their human relationship partners. Many people’s lives are enriched by service dogs, through training, companionship and the dogs’ daily work. I will portray the dogs, their life partners, and the many great people who contribute their love and talent to prepare the dogs for a lifetime of dedicated service. I will tell the story through compelling portraits and journalistic photos. I have already been invited into the hearts and lives of fascinating people and wonderful dogs. The work I’ve done so far leads me in my desire to create more photographs for the book. As the project continues, I will photograph veterinary professionals, breeders, trainers, and volunteers. I will work closely with many people whose quality of life is greatly enhanced by their involvement with service dogs. A variety of working service dogs will be profiled. The scope of work performed by service dogs is tremendous. In addition to Mobility Assistance, dogs provide service to veterans suffering PTSD, children with autism, and residents of long-term care facilities. A relatively new area of service is Court Dogs. These dogs accompany children and adults who must take the stand as a victim or witness for sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence, and other emotionally stressful cases. There are many benefits to raising puppies to become service dogs. The project will document people who share their talent and homes in several Raising Programs. In the Prison Pups program, inmates provide early training for those puppies destined to be service dogs. The improved self-esteem, confidence, and interpersonal skills gained through their work with the puppies helps these inmates improve their success as productive citizens once they are released from prison. This project will help promote awareness of the valuable contribution these magnificent dogs provide to our society. I also hope this book will rally the hearts of the many people whose lives are enhanced by their involvement with service dogs. My mission as an artist is to advocate joy and gratitude by creating and sharing photographs that portray the best things in life. This project springs from my creative mission.
