- Description: Capturing the bond between my son and his dog was a labor of love. I feel that overgrooming has its place but not here. The turbulance of both my son's hair and his dogs coat along with the ease of their closeness is the statement...very clearly a bond.
- Brief Directions: I did not want to clutter the photo with excess of color or background. Choosing a shirt that mathched the background allowed greater focus on the subject. Soft lighting and a relaxed subject and I nailed the look I was aiming for. Just prior to taking the photo I asked my son to play on the floor with the dog. They rough-housed and rolled around for a few minutes. Then I asked him to pick up his dog and sit on the stool. His hair matched the dogs coat...in need of a brushing but exactly as natural as I wanted...they way they look most of the time capturing their personalities. The gentle smile on his face was his own doing.
- Notes: I set the camera to ISO 100, , 1/8 sec priority and got an f9 aperature. I do not like to use a tripod since I feel it creates a hard barrier between me and my subject. When I am ready I raise my camera, take the shot and quickly lower the camera for eye contact. I find a flow this way and get more relaxed and natural results. I had a cord conneced to an Alienbee B400 with a 24" x 36" softbox set at 1/4 power as the light source located slightly above my right shoulder.
- Gear: EOS 20D, 24-70mm 2.8L, Alienbee B400+softbox
