Short Report: Maxtor One-Touch Drives

You won’t forget to back up important photos with these easy-to-use drives

SR: Maxtor One-Touch Drives

Everyone knows to back up, right? But does everyone do it? The Maxtor OneTouch external hard drives offer an excellent solution. These units are big, with 80 GB or more of storage, so you easily can back up a couple of standard hard drives. They come in both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire versions, which expedites data transfer, plus they feature a special button that automatically backs up your data with a single touch (with the included software installed).

You set up the software to tell the unit what to back up. This can be done automatically—the program will scan your drive(s) and pick data folders for backup. Or tell it which folders to include; this way, you can just have your photo folders set for backup, for example. When you push the button, the software scans your hard drive for new files in those folders and copies them to the external drive.

Having your images backed up gives you peace of mind for important photos, plus, since these drives are plug-and-play for Windows XP and Mac OS X (other operating systems work, but with less functionality), you can plug it into another computer, especially a laptop, and access your photos.

The units are small, about 6x8x2-inches and, as of this writing, they come in 80 to 300 GB sizes. Suggested Retail Price: $159.95 to $349.95.
