Toolbox: LED Continuous Lights

The next generation of led tools for working with stills and video

STUDIO AND PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS
LED lights that are built for professional applications tend to have a larger cost up front, but over time the long-lasting LEDs and low-wattage consumption will end up saving a lot of money.

The 24.9x14.9x3.5-inch Lowel Prime 400 LED panels include an average 50,000 hour life span. Available in Tungsten (3200K) or Daylight (5600K), there's a 50° beam angle with 100% dimming, with an optional honeycomb grid available for a stronger beam with more contrast. An optional PRM-420 4-way Barndoor set will even illumination output via the subtle Prime Lite Diffusion Gel for minimizing multiple shadows cast from the large LED panel. The unit weighs less than 18 pounds, and it can be hung with the included C-clamp or mounted on a stand with a standard 5⁄8-inch thread. Estimated Street Price: $1,999.

ANOVA LED EcoFlood
With next-generation lighting features like WiFi control and ambient light measurement, the ANOVA LED EcoFlood light is the first new fixture in an advanced series of lighting solutions from Rotolight called the AlphaNova line. The ANOVA One is available in daylight (5600K) or tungsten (3200K), offering the equivalent of a 1000-watt tungsten bulb while drawing only 38 watts of power at full output. The more advanced ANOVA Two is a bicolor system with both color temperatures in a single unit. WiFi compatibility provides wireless control over brightness, color, system settings and firmware updates. The system also features Magic Eye ambient light sampling and matching technology for synchronizing lighting settings on multiple locations. List Price: Begins at $139.

Chimera LED Lightbanks
Available in three models—Flood Tungsten at 3200K, Flood Daylight at 5600K and Spot Daylight at 5600K with a tighter beam spread of 30° (instead of 50°) for more throw—the Litepanels 1x1 provides an even square foot of illumination in a fairly flat fixture that's less than two inches in thickness. Multiple 1x1 units can be mounted together for more oomph, and Chimera's new line of softbox-like LED Lightbanks are formatted to fit the 1x1 lighting system perfectly to diffuse the light output. Litepanels also offers the high-output Hilio for working with distances of 20 to 25 feet. The soft-white LEDs can be narrowed to a tight 15° angle for the equivalent of a 1000W tungsten fixture. The system weighs 13 pounds, and it includes an integrated gimbal mount and yoke for placement. Estimated Street Price: Begins at $1,795 (Litepanels 1x1); $274 (Chimera LED Lightbank); $3,195 (Litepanels Hilio).

Nila JNH
With more than 20,000 hours of life, Nila's JNH lights can be stacked together to create a large bank of long-lasting lights, each outputting the equivalent of a 200-watt daylight or 350-watt tungsten fixture. The JNH draws only 65 watts of power itself, and stacked modules can output an equivalent maximum of 1200 watts daylight and 2000 watts tungsten. Nila machines its products for durability, and each unit includes a universal 90-240 volt power supply that can be used anywhere in the world, which makes the JNH particularly useful for on-location shooting as the lights can be used in an ambient temperature range of -58° F to +122° F. It's available in 5800K or 3400K. The Nila Boxer offers an 800- to 1200-watt HMI equivalence and a 1200- to 2000-watt tungsten fixture equivalence; the Nila SL 6000-watts tungsten-equivalent fixture will meet even bigger lighting needs. List Price: Begins at $1,799 (Nila JNH Daylight/Tungsten).

ikan is a popular manufacturer in the video space, with a huge selection of LED lighting options, starting with the simple, affordable on-camera iLED155 Basic Light Kit. Six brand-new, powerful studio LED lights also have been added to its line of studio LED lights, beginning with the ID 500 model, featuring integrated barndoors, 5600K daylight color temp and powering options through the AC/DC 12v-14.4v power range or pro battery possibilities. Other models in the line also offer tungsten and hybrid daylight/tungsten combinations, solid metal construction and vertical or horizontal positioning. The new top-of-the-line Multi-K XL variable color temperature LED light offers individually adjustable RGB LED bulbs with variable color temperature control and 1000 watts of output. List Price: $249 (iLED155); $499 (ID 500); $2,195 (Multi-K XL).
