Estimated Street Price: $499 (with 16-50mm power-zoom)
Sony’s fourth-generation, entry-level mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the NEX-3N combines the excellent image quality of a 16.1-megapixel Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor with a number of features to simplify making good photos. The camera is sold with a compact 16-50mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 power-zoom kit lens, and has a new zoom control lever on the body to operate it, bringing compact-camera convenience to the interchangeable-lens market.
The sensor features the same adaptive noise-reduction technology as the flagship SLT-A99, producing outstanding image quality throughout the camera’s ISO 100-16,000 range. Handheld Twilight mode rapidly records six images and combines the data to produce one low-noise image. Anti-Motion Blur mode combines data from six rapidly recorded images to produce a single motion that minimizes subject blur.
Contrast-based AF with 25 AF points is supplemented by manual focusing with focus peaking. The 3-inch LCD monitor tilts 180 degrees for easy odd-angle shooting and self-portraits. Helpful features include such Sony standbys as Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight, Auto HDR and 15 Picture Effects, such as Posterization (color and black-and-white), Partial Color, Retro Photo and High Contrast Mono.
