Fujifilm’s mirrorless X-series lineup began with the flagship X-Pro1, followed by the lower-priced X-E1, the compact X-M1 and the entry-level X-A1. Now we have the first second-generation X-camera, the X-E2, which improves on its fine predecessor in a number of ways.
The X-E2 features Fujifilm’s 16.3-megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor, which adds more than 100,000 phase-detection pixels for quicker AF in good light (the camera automatically switches to contrast-based AF in dim light). The X-Trans sensor features a unique RGB filter array that differs from conventional Bayer arrays by using a more random arrangement, which positions red, green and blue pixels in every horizontal and vertical row. This minimizes moiré and false colors, allowing Fujifilm to do away with the sharpness-robbing optical low-pass filter required by most Bayer-sensor cameras. The sensor works with the new EXR Processor II to improve image quality and shooting speed, as well as provide the Lens Modulation Optimizer, which employs information on lens focal length and aperture to compensate for diffraction and aberrations.
The X-E2 retains the high-res OLED EVF of its predecessor, but provides a new, larger and higher-res 3.0-inch LCD monitor. It can shoot at 7 fps (3 fps with focus tracking). The camera also can now do 1080 full HD video at 60p, as well as 30p (also 720p/60 and 30), with stereo sound via built-in or optional external mic. One-touch Wi-Fi connection lets you transfer images to smartphone or computer, and also geotag images using your smartphone’s GPS.
Like all the interchangeable-lens Fujifilm X-series, the X-E2 uses the Fujifilm X-mount, which provides for a wider opening and deeper mounting of the X-Pro1 lenses, minimizing the flange back distance (the distance between lens mount and image plane) and sending light more directly to the pixels. Currently, nine XF lenses are available, from 14mm to 50-230mm.
Dimensions are the same as the X-E1, 5.1×2.9×1.5 inches and 10.6 ounces.
STANDOUT FEATURE: A high-speed hybrid autofocus with on-sensor phase-detection AF.
1.Dials atop the camera provide direct setting of shutter speeds and exposure compensation, and resist inadvertent turning.
2.The X-E2 is available in a black or black-and-silver finish.
3.The EVF can display lots of useful information in addition to the live image.
