For candid and casual photography, today’s fixed-lens cameras offer near-SLR performance and some unique tricks all their own

This Article Features Photo Zoom

toolboxThe SIGMA DP-1 and DP-2 both feature a 14-megapixel FOVEON X3 imager and are among the few compacts available in the U.S. with a CMOS sensor, the type more commonly found in D-SLRs. In fact, it’s the same sensor that’s used in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR. The sensor delivers resolution of 2652x1768x3 layers. The DP-1 features a nonzooming 16.6mm ƒ/4 Sigma lens (six elements in five groups) that’s the optical equivalent of a 28mm lens on a 35mm film camera. The Sigma DP-2 offers the equivalent of a 35mm ƒ/2.8 lens, but otherwise is essentially identical to the DP-1. Both offer full manual controls and RAW image capture. Estimated Street Price: $799 (DP1); less than $999 (DP2).

toolbox Looking more like a petite SLR than a compact, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 offers a 15x Carl Zeiss zoom lens (31-465mm equivalent) that incorporates ED (super low-dispersion) glass for improved performance and Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization to minimize the effect of camera shake. It features 9.1-megapixel resolution and a versatile three-inch, tilt-up LCD display. Other features include manual exposure controls, Face Detection with Smile Shutter release and Sony’s unique NightShot infrared system. NightShot lets you shoot photos in total darkness without using a flash—enabling you to get near-dark and in-the-dark night scenes that you couldn’t with any other camera. List Price: $379.
