Third-party speedlights, accessories and light modifiers create a highly portable and affordable lighting system that you can take anywhere

This Article Features Photo Zoom
HONL PHOTO
The Honl Photo Speed System is a collection of lightweight and durable light modifiers for shoe-mount flashes. With a mix of grids, snoots, reflectors, gobos and gels, these very portable tools fit practically any shoe-mount flash and attach easily with the Speed Strap. The nonslip Velcro® strap simply wraps around the flash head and doesn't use any glue. Estimated Street Price: $9 to $29.

PHOTOFLEX
Designed especially for handheld shooting, the extra-small LiteDome kit from Photoflex includes the MultiClamp for easy mounting onto any 5⁄8-inch stud. It comes with a softbox and accepts a variety of other ones from Photoflex. They all aim to deliver the look of controlled, off-camera studio lighting to photographers who work with battery-powered flashes. The compact size and easy setup make the kit very portable. List Price: $113.

HARBOR DIGITAL DESIGN
Boost your flash output with Harbor Digital Design's XT Flash Extender. The unit mounts securely to the flash with a custom adapter so no straps or Velcro® are necessary. Quick, secure mounting allows for easy and accurate focusing on your subject, helpful when shooting action or fast-moving wildlife. It produces up to two or more stops of additional light at 100 feet. Estimated Street Price: $54.

LUMIQUEST
Another way of spreading light more evenly across your subject is with the LumiQuest Quik Bounce. With a unique design, the unit has mini-barndoors that open to combine bounce light from the ceiling while redirecting part of it forward to provide fill and more even illumination. For softening light, the Softbox III is 8x9 inches and attaches directly to the flash head using Velcro® or the nonadhesive UltraStrap, and it's convenient when photographing sports, wildlife and other fast-moving action. Estimated Street Price: $37 (Quik Bounce); $37 (Softbox).

STO-FEN
The Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce creates a bare-light effect from your flash. It's a single piece of molded, translucent and somewhat flexible plastic that snaps over the flash head, making it easy to install and remove. The bare-bulb effect causes light to scatter in all directions, with some light hitting your subject directly and some bouncing back from nearby reflective surfaces. The result is even, wraparound light with a soft shadow behind your subject. Estimated Street Price: $19 to $24.
