Samsung GX-20
ESTIMATED STREET PRICE: $699 (w/18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 lens)
Another camera that’s dropped in price one category since last year’s Buyer’s Guide, the GX-20 is almost identical to the Pentax K20D, featuring the same 14.6-megapixel Samsung/Pentax CMOS image sensor, but with Samsung’s own image processor.
LARGE LENS SELECTION: Samsung markets its own lenses as well as Schneider lenses for the GX-20, but the camera also will accept all Pentax-mount lenses, which provides great focal length flexibility.
RAW BUTTON: Like the K20D, the GX-20 has a handy button that switches between RAW and JPEG shooting. But the GX-20 offers only one RAW format: Adobe’s DNG.
MULTI-EXPOSURE CAPABILITY: You can make 2 to 9 exposures on a single “frame.” Auto EV automatically adjusts exposure for each image, or you can manually adjust exposure for each.
BURST CAPTURE:The GX-20 can capture frames as fast as 3 per second for up to 38 JPEGs or 16 RAW. Or, capture an unlimited number of JPEGs, up to the capacity of your memory card, at 2.3 frames per second. |
Like the K20D, the GX-20 is weather- and dust-resistant. Even if you don’t typically shoot in harsh conditions, it’s reassuring to know that your camera is well sealed against the elements. If dust does sneak in while you’re changing lenses, there’s a sensor-cleaning system to help keep your images unspotted.
As the GX-20’s image-stabilization system is sensor-based, it works with all lenses. The GX-20 also features a 2.7-inch LCD monitor with live-view capability. As with the K20D, a RAW button allows instant switching between RAW and JPEG shooting, but the GX-20 offers only one RAW format: Adobe’s DNG.
Along with common exposure modes like aperture-priority and shutter-priority, the GX-20’s Sensitivity Priority AE allows you to set the shutter speed and aperture combination you prefer, and the camera automatically adjusts the ISO to accommodate your settings. Exposure compensation also is available for up to +/-3 EV in 1/2- or 1/3-stop increments.
