1. Lenses: There are a total of six Micro Four Thirds lenses available from Olympus for use with the E-PL2, and Olympus also released three new conversion lenses—a fisheye, wide-angle and macro. 2. Handy buttons: The buttons on the rear of the E-PL2 have been consolidated from the E-PL1’s design for a more efficient and simpler approach to changing settings and functions. 3. LCD Monitor: The 3.0-inch, 460,000-dot LCD monitor features twice the resolution of the E-PL1 and works interactively with the control dial.

Olympus PEN E-PL2

LIST PRICE: $599 (with 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 lens)

IN-CAMERA CREATIVE FEATURES: Olympus has been including Art Filters in its cameras since the E-30 DSLR, with a variety of fun, high-quality digital filters for customizing images and looks of images and video without the need for image processing later. The E-PL2 includes six Art Filters, with the new Dramatic Tone filter for HDR-like images of high-contrast and dynamic skies. You now can add these effects to stills and video after capture, and other modes include Pop Art, Soft Focus, Grainy Film, Pin Hole and the very cool Diorama mode for tilt-shift-lens-like effects.

ACCESSORY PORT: The new AP2 accessory port allows you to directly connect external peripherals like the VF-2 detachable electronic viewfinder and the SEMA-1 external microphone adapter. Released along with the camera, the MAL-1 Close-Up Spotlight provides illumination for macro shooting, while the PENPAL Bluetooth accessory allows you to wirelessly share images to social networks via compatible smartphones, Macs and PCs.

HD VIDEO: The E-PL2 captures high-definition 720p video, which can be output directly to HDTVs through an optional HDMI cable. While connected, the HDMI Control mode allows standard remotes to access video playback right from the camera.

LIVE GUIDE: The Live Guide allows you to preview your image and make changes to the image with simple graphic sliders that are easy to understand and use. You also can use the Live Guide to preview setting changes on video.
Somewhere in between a DSLR and a compact camera, the Olympus PEN E-PL2 is the fourth camera in the digital PEN series, building on its predecessor, the E-PL1, with new features and a more efficient design. By removing the mirror system found in DSLRs, Olympus’ PEN series of mirrorless cameras offers a body comparable to the size of a compact, but with the creative advantage of interchangeable lenses. The design allows Olympus to fit a Micro Four Thirds sensor (at approximately eight times the size of a standard compact sensor) into a body that’s roughly pocket-sized.

The E-PL2 carries over the same Live MOS Four Thirds, 12.3-megapixel sensor from the E-PL1, but the body has been retooled to improve the ergonomics and to offer a bigger grip for better holding. Buttons have been placed for more effective use, and performance improvements include a higher maximum ISO range of 200 to 6400 (over 100 to 3200 of the E-PL1) and an increased maximum shutter speed of 1⁄4000 sec.

The E-PL2 incorporates many of the classic staple Olympus features, including Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction and in-body image stabilization. That translates to smaller and less expensive lenses, especially important as Micro Four Thirds lenses are built to be as diminutive as possible. There are three modes of in-body image stabilization for best compensation from camera shake, low-light situations or when shooting handheld without a tripod.

STANDOUT FEATURE: The E-PL2 includes the newly designed “Movie & Still Compatible” (MSC) ED 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 zoom lens, with a noise-dampened inner focusing mechanism for silent running during high-definition video capture.
VERDICT: Photographers looking for an interchangeable-lens camera that isn’t too bulky will find the E-PL2 is an excellent representation of today’s technology with the classic style of the historic PEN line.

Olympus E-5
If you’re considering moving up to a camera with interchangeable lenses, you might consider going pro with the Olympus E-5, which offers a 5 fps burst rate and faster TTL phase-difference autofocus when not using Live View. List Price: $1,699 (body only).
Olympus E-PL1
The E-PL1 offers many of the same features as the E-PL2 at $100 less, including the easy-to-use design, efficient size and great image quality thanks to the same Micro Four Thirds sensor. The 14-42mm lens that’s included with the E-PL1 doesn’t feature the quiet motor of the newer Movie & Still Compatible MSC 14-42mm lens, however. List Price: $499 (with 14-42mm lens).
