Canon EOS Rebel T3i

ESTIMATED STREET PRICE: $849 (with 18-55mm IS II zoom)

INTRODUCED
3/2011
Canon's top entry-level DSLR, the EOS Rebel T3i offers the EOS 60D's 18-megapixel Canon CMOS sensor, processing, video capabilities and tilt/swivel LCD monitor in an even more compact, lower-priced package. The 63-zone dual-layer metering and 9-point AF are the same as in the EOS 60D.

A new Basic+ mode analyzes color, brightness, movement, contrast and more; the camera then adjusts focus, exposure, white balance, Auto Lighting Optimizer and Picture Style accordingly to optimize image quality. There's also a new Feature Guide with a Quick Control screen that includes detailed descriptions of camera settings along with easy-to-understand directions on how to use them for more creative control.

The T3i also incorporates the Canon Creative Image Filters introduced in the 60D, including Soft Focus Effect, Grainy Black and White, Toy Camera and Miniature Effect. The effects are applied to images in-camera without affecting the original file.
Video features include 1920x1080p full HD at 30, 24 or 25 fps, and 1280x720p HD and 640x480p SD at 60 or 50 fps, with manual or auto control of exposure and focus. A new Movie Digital Zoom feature provides up to 10x magnification of the center of the image in full HD mode with no loss of image quality, while Video Snapshot captures short video clips and combines them into a single video file ready to share online or show on an HDTV. A built-in microphone records mono sound, or you can connect an optional external stereo mic for stereo audio.

The 3.0-inch, vari-angle LCD monitor features 1,040,000 dots and a 3:2 aspect ratio that matches that of still images (and better matches the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD video than the 4:3 monitors of most DSLRs). The T3i can use all EOS lenses, both EF and EF-S models.

STANDOUT FEATURE: A 10x Movie Digital Zoom with no loss of image quality greatly expands shooting horizons.
