Sony SLT-A77
ESTIMATED STREET PRICE: $1,399 (body only)
Sony's new A77 is the top model in its translucent-mirror-technology camera lineup, and it offers a remarkable array of features. First is the new 24.3-megapixel Sony Exmor APS-C HD CMOS sensor (which also is used in the new Sony SLT-A65 and NEX-7 cameras). Second is the ability to shoot those big 24.3-megapixel files at 12 fps, with continuous phase-detection autofocusing via a 19-point AF system (with 11 cross-type points). A brief 50-millisecond release-time lag, courtesy of a high-speed shutter with electronic first curtain, complements the speedy AF system.
A new XGA OLED eye-level electronic viewfinder provides much better resolution, contrast and response than the LCD-based EVFs used in previous EVF cameras, and offers eye-level viewing for still and video use. The OLED finder can display lots of information if you want it, as well as preview effects of camera settings. There's also an articulated 3.0-inch, 921,000-dot LCD monitor (the camera automatically switches it off when the camera is brought up to the eye for EVF use).
Then there's the ability to shoot 1920x1080 full HD video at 60p (and 24p), thanks to the new AVCHD Progressive v2.0 format—again, with continuous phase-detection AF and convenient eye-level viewing when desired. A built-in stereo microphone and audio noise reduction enhance audio quality.
This is the first above-entry-level SLT model (it's actually the long-awaited replacement for the DSLR-A700), so it has a rugged body sealed against weather and dust, and a 150,000-cycle shutter. The A77 has a "normal" DSLR-sized body, more comfortable for larger hands than the very compact previous SLT models, and with room for a bigger battery, important for a camera that's in Live View mode all the time. The optional battery grip and flash unit are also weather-sealed.
The SLT-A77 can use the full line of Sony A-mount lenses, as well as legacy Minolta Maxxum lenses. |
