|1. The 3-inch LCD monitor tilts and rotates, and provides touch AF, great for video focus-racking. 2. The optional BG-E14 battery grip takes two LP-E6 lithium-ion batteries to double shooting capacity, or six readily available AA batteries, and makes for easy vertical-format operation. 3. A top LCD panel makes it easier to set many camera features.
Canon EOS 70D
Estimated Street Price: $1,199 (K-5 II/body only)
Since the first DSLRs that could do video, a big problem has been poor video AF performance. The video-capable DSLRs' quick phase-detection AF systems were rendered inoperative in Live View (and, thus, Movie) mode, so contrast-based AF off the image sensor had to be used. And that was way slower. Canon seems to have found a solution with the EOS 70D and its Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. Each of the new 20.2-megapixel image sensor's pixels contains two photodiodes so that all the photosites can both record light and provide phase-detection AF simultaneously for quick phase-difference AF in Live View mode for still and video shooting. (For viewfinder operation, the 70D has a 19-point all-cross-type phase-detection AF system similar to the one in the EOS 7D.) The 3-inch Vari-Angle LCD monitor has touch-screen capability, so you can do smooth focus changes during videos just by touching a new subject on the LCD. The camera can use all EF and EF-S lenses; the new Dual Pixel AF system is, at the time of this writing, compatible with 103 of them.
Video capabilities include 1080p at 30 and 24 fps, and 720p at 60 and 30 fps, in MOV format and stereo sound via a built-in or an accessory microphone. As a still camera, the 70D offers 7 fps shooting (up to 16 RAW or 65 JPEGs), a normal ISO range of 100-12,800 (expandable to 25,600), multi-shot noise reduction, in-camera HDR and multiple-exposure capability. An eye-level pentaprism viewfinder shows 98% of the actual image area.
AF microadjustment is included (absent on the 60D predecessor), and there's built-in Wi-Fi.
STANDOUT FEATURE: Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides quick and accurate phase-detection AF for live-view and video.
