Mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras have taken a chunk out of the entry-level DSLR market because most are much smaller, yet produce DSLR image quality. But they lack the DSLR's always-available clear eye-level optical TTL viewfinder, most have a limited range of lenses, and all have poor battery life compared to a DSLR since they're in Live View mode all the time.

To address these trade-offs, Canon has introduced the smallest DSLR with an APS-C image sensor, the new EOS Rebel SL1. It's a real DSLR with an eye-level DSLR optical viewfinder (as well as live view on the touch-screen LCD panel when you want that). It takes the full range of more than 60 EF and EF-S EOS system lenses, from an 8-15mm fisheye zoom and a 10-22mm superwide zoom to an 800mm supertelephoto, and it has battery life typical of an entry-level DSLR. Yet it's much smaller than the other EOS Rebel models—about the same size and weight as the "mini-DSLR"-style mirrorless cameras like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5.

Despite its tiny 4.6x3.6x2.7-inch dimensions (and 13.1-ounce weight), the Rebel SL1 features the same newly developed 18-megapixel CMOS APS-C image sensor, DIGIC 5 processor and 3-inch 1040K-dot touch-screen LCD monitor (albeit a non-tilting/rotating one) as the flagship Rebel model, the T5i. The ISO range also is the same: 100-12,800, expandable to 25,600 (100-6400, expandable to 12,800 for video).

Like the T5i, the SL1 features Canon's new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor with a wider AF area in Live View and Video modes, and a faster continuous AF speed, than the system introduced in the EOS Rebel T4i. And like the T5i, the SL1 can shoot full HD 1080 video at 30p and 24p.
