Chicago Sun-Times Fires Entire Photo Staff

Still not convinced that the world of photography and its place in mainstream media isn't changing so fast as to be considered turned on its head? The Chicago Sun-Times last Thursday announced it would be laying off its entire photography staff, effective immediately. The paper cited the increased importance of video in news reporting, and said it would be working with freelance photographers and videographers going forward. My first thought was, "I wonder how much crowdsourcing they're going to rely on?" Turns out lots, as evidenced by the DPReview story the next day about how the Sun-Times issued a memo on Friday with details about how all reporters on staff would be given iPhone photography training—you know, so they can replace the professional photojournalists with their DSLRs. While I'm sure this is not going to turn out well for the paper, it's clearly not turning out well for photographers, either. The times, they are a changing.

The original story from the other paper in town, The Tribune, is here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-chicago-sun-times-photo-20130530,0,4361142.story. The comments are equally interesting too. And here's a link to the story about the iPhonography training via DP Review: http://connect.dpreview.com/post/0262470397/sun-times-expects-reporters-to-become-mobile-photographers
